Q: We have a customer with a 5HP/ 3ph refer compressor and wants to support it thruogh small power blips with a UPS. What size unit should we offer??

A: Hi Jack, A 5HP motor is going to be about 4.5kVA worth of continuous load. The motor presents a challenge to the UPS, however, because of the inrush current a motor requires during startup. The value of the inrush might be 3 to 4 x's continuous load (it could also be more or less for certain types of motors). The UPS needs to be sized not only for the continuous load, but also for the inrush. Based on those estimates, that puts to total motor inrush around 15kVA. I'd recommend a 20kVA UPS without knowing more details. If you can gather the inrush value from your motor, that would be the best way to make sure you aren't over-sizing your solution.

Q: My company recently purchased five Eaton 9130 1500va/1350w UPS units. When we installed them in cubicles and turned on, they became pretty loud from the backend fan unit. Is there a way to quiet the fan unit or is there another Eaton model that we should look at in purchasing that is equal in spec's to what we currently have and is quieter?

A: Greg, The Eaton 9130's fan is going to be louder because it is a double online conversion UPS. Since this type of UPS is converting the AC power to DC power then back from DC to AC there is more heat created by this process and the fan's typically run a faster speed. I see you are in West Virginia so your power grid should be pretty good there. Most likely a line-interactive or standby UPS would be sufficient and much more affordable. What things are you hooking up to the UPS? Is this a basic desktop system then the lower end standby or line-interactive units would easily suffice. The line interactive do not protect from as many power problems but given the quality of your power grid you probably do not need all of them for your desktop situation. These also typically do not require a fan and when they do they typically run at different speeds depending on if you are on battery power or not. On battery they run faster. Standby would be the Eaton 3S. The line interactive could be either Eaton 5110 or Eaton 5115 or the Evolution Tower(depending on what you want from a feature set). Brian

Q: I need a manual or Eaton Powerware documentation that describes in detail all the UPS alarm codes on the 9130 (1&2kva)units, as well as the 9135 (6 kva)units. We deployed hundreds of these units globally and I receive alarms via webcards that are not descriptive enough of the problem or root cause.

Q: I just purchased a new powerware Ferrups 4.3KVA to replace my noisy existing unit. I want to come out of the UPS into a distribution panel but can't figure out the wiring. I have X1 (10) XT1 (12) XT2 (13) & XO-N (11) on the terminal block.can I use X1, XT1 & XT2 as feeds for my distribution panel,seems like a 12 ga wire single wire is to light for the load it is capable of supplying. Q: I need a recomendation for a UPS to be used on large ships. It needs to have issolated inputs and outputs because ships AC does not have one side of the AC referenced to ground. Current project needs a 115VAC in/out with a load of 500 watts for 1 hour.

Q: What is the difference of Ferrups FE18KVA and FE4-3K25032? which one is better? Thanks!

A: Hi Doris, The Ferrups is a product line that starts from 500VA and goes to 18kVA. It is configurable to match your specific application requirements. The Ferrups FE18kVA refers to the 18kVA model, but is not detailed enough to be an orderable part. FE4.3K25032 is a serial number of a 4.3kVA Ferrups. Q: Am trying to buy 8 each small ups units. This is my 3rd attempt in as many hours to get info. The Eaton Nova AVR 1100 appears to have been discontinued. Is this true. If so, what model replaces it? And where can I buy 8 of them? Let this question go unanswered and I will be happy to shop else where.

A: Bruce, As you have found out the Nova AVR 1100 was discontinued some time ago. The closest match to the Nova will be the Eaton 5110 1000 (103004258-5591). You can pick these up at many of the common sites (www.cdw.com, www.provantage.com, www.insight.com, www.pcconnection.com, etc...) Q: We currently have 6 Eaton 5130 UPSs installed in the bottom of our racks. We are installing overhead mesh racks to move power from the floor to overhead. We need an additional 4' of power cable. What do you suggest for a solution that is OSHA approved? Please advise! Thank you

A: The easiest solution would be to put your UPS in the top of the rack to make up the distance. Otherwise, you are going to need to talk with a local electrician that can make recommendations specifically about your setup considering this is going to be a permanent installation.

Q: Foreseer is being installed at our Corporate sites. We are using in rack HP S132 PDU's. Our DC PDU's can read the utilization from the racks that are directly fed into them. However our new standard is to utilize Bus Ducts (A & B)that feed rows of racks from DC PDU's (1 &2). I thought I read a technical spec on Foreseer that it could communicate with an HP utility that can allow it to read the power utilization from a specific HP Server/device. Can I monitor individual servers with the HP utility and Foreseer in place in my environment? If so, what are the requirements? (Hardware/Software)

Personally, I have seen the HP utility but I haven't seen any detail about Foreseer pulling that information in. Q: Your Blackout Tracker is great, and I have a related question. Where can I get any published, and preferably unbiased data, on the probability of start-up for emergency or back-up generators following a blackout? DGs? Gas turbines? Up to and including 5 mW. I am a reliability/availability consultant and I have clients who are asking for it.

Real-life data on generators might be pretty difficult. I say that, because most manufacturers aren't going to publish their failure rates publicly. I'm not sure that there is a perfect avenue for you, but data center user groups such as Gartner or LinkedIN groups might be the best place to look.

A: Unfortunately as a manufacturer, we typically do not provide detailed schematics for our products. A primary reason for not publishing this information is to maintain the proprietary circuitry that resides in the UPS. If you are looking for a basic electrical diagram, or one-line drawing, we should be able to provide that even though the 9125 is an older, legacy product where documentation might be more limited. Q: I need to buy a UPS, but I'm not sure how to go about selecting the right one for my business. How do I get started?

A: Great question. Defining the loads (what the UPS will support) is the best place to start picking the right UPS. Armed with this information, your minimum UPS requirements can usually be defined as:

  • Minimum UPS capacity required (VA/watts)
  • Voltage (usually 120 or 208 in North America)
  • Runtime (how long the UPS can run on battery)
  • UPS receptacles needed (standard wall outlets, computer style or other)
Once you answer these basic questions, you can define the level of technology you need from among the following three options:
  • Standby – basic UPS technology for PCs, kiosks and point-of-sale
  • Line Interactive – voltage-regulating UPS platforms for commercial applications to protect servers, switches, storage and general IT equipment
  • Online or Double Conversion – premium UPS protection for mission- critical applications, poor power environments and sensitive electrical equipment

Q: I recently purchased a 9155, but I'm not running any software. Do you have a recommendation for monitoring?

A: The best way to find the optimal monitoring solution for your needs is to check out our Intelligent Power Software Suite.

We offer a variety of options for communication, as noted below:

Single UPS – Webcard
A single UPS can usually be monitored through the optional network card. Our network cards are their own servers, so they record event history, send email and text message alerts, and provide remote access to real-time status. This is usually the best way to manage one UPS.
 
Shutdown – Webcard and IPP
If your UPS is protecting servers, you can use our software to schedule safe shutdowns and prevent data loss in the event of a prolonged power outage. For an Eaton UPS with a network card, Intelligent Power Protector (IPP) is the Eaton shutdown agent. It can communicate directly with the network interface card (or over USB and serial if needed) to register itself and receive alerts to initiate soft shutdown of your IT systems.
 
Multiple UPS installations – Webcards and IPM
For multiple UPSs spread out across a network closet, campus, or enterprise, Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) software is designed to aggregate and manage your power devices (both UPSs and network- enabled PDUs).
 
Virtualization – Webcard and IPM
IPM is the industry leader integrating power with virtualization platforms. IPM shutdown agent management enables safe shutdown of virtualized servers—even servers in clusters running vCenter or XenCenter. Live migrations can be triggered to transparently move virtual machines to an available server on the network, for data integrity and zero downtime.

A: Eaton has several network cards for different UPSs, so setup depends on your specific platform and card. Eaton’s webcards are hot-swappable, so installation is easy; each card ships with instructions to set the IP address, login password and other parameters. Those instructions can also be found on the connectivity portion of our website.

Q: I'm looking at several of the 9130 models. How do I know what plug my equipment has and what UPS and receptacle I need?

A: If you can’t recognize your plugs, you can try matching them in our handy chart. Also, plugs (male) and receptacles (female) are often made with the name printed or molded onto the connector. If neither of those options works, you may find the information you need in the manufacturer’s specifications or data sheets.
